The Cranbrook Art Museum in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, is affectionately known as the ‘Birthplace of Modernism’, and for good reason. Designed by father-and-son duo Eliel and Eero Saarinen in 1942, its adjacent Academy of Art helped shape now legendary design minds, from Harry Bertoia and Florence Knoll to Charles and Ray Eames. And now, after two years and a $22M spend, the Finnish architects’ equally influential campus has undergone a makeover, including the addition of a new Collections Wing. Executed by SmithGroup, the overhaul included the renovation of the building’s pioneering lighting system(recessed in a coffered ceiling), while the new 20,000 sq ft wing means the museum can finally display its entire permanent collection, a 6,000-piece art, architecture and design trove covering over a century of creativity.

Foster + Partners’ Masdar City, a new carbon-neutral colony near Abu Dhabi, is intended to have no fossil-fuelled cars at street level. Built by 2getthere and designed by Zagato, its Personal Rapid Transit(PRT) system points the way to a different kind of mobility in a country where car culture is rabid and railways absent. In its first phase, the PRT consists of ten electrically powered, driverless white pods, seating up to four adults and two children, that zip along a kilometre-long course by following sensors, In time, Masdar’s spacious undercroft(the city sits o a concrete raft to help climate control and servicing) will buzz with electric freight and passenger traffic - up to 3,000 vehicles in all.

Porsche is reviving the legendary Speedster name on a limited-edition, open-top version of the 911 created to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the firm’s in-house individualization operation. The 2011 Porsche 911 Speedster is powered by the latest version of its 3.8-liter flat-6 cylinder engine. As recently confirmed for the 911 Carrera GTS, it delivers 402 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. The only gearbox available is a seven-speed PDK double-clutch gearbox with a locking rear differential.

Built in just a few months, wallpaper.com follows how, using
a half-built hotel structure, as well as the cleverly adapted plans of a cancelled US commission, the new Istanbul HQ of Turkish fashion house Vakko takes shape. The centre was designed by New York practice REX, led by Joshua Prince-Ramus, who sought to merge the disparate functions of Vakko’s fashion business together with Vakko CEO
Cem Hakko’s ventures into youth media, collectively known as The Power Group. The solution is almost two buildings in one. REX placed TV and radio studios for Power in the original underground car park, beneath a stack of angled steel boxes housing meeting rooms, showrooms and an auditorium. This forms a centrepiece in the core of the building’s outer concrete ring, which itself contains offices. Meanwhile,
the ground floor, hidden beneath the entrance drive, houses a space where the Vakko fashionistas can eat and socialise with the Power media crowd. Constructing a vast project like this to such a wildly unrealistic time frame would normally be unthinkable, if not impossible. Yet, inside the cool, calm offices and stacked, mirror-clad rooms that form its prismatic heart, Vakko has an HQ that really cuts it.

This bijoux table lamp is easily one of the most enigmatic pieces designed by the prolific Bouroullec brothers. The asymmetrical hood and base creates a squat profile that brings to mind a futuristic street lamp but when lit, it acquires a monolithic architectural quality. Whichever your perspective, it draws attention for all the right reasons. Very handily, the base comes in three different versions: a small plastic model in red or green with a base that doubles as a valet tray for keys and coins; a larger model available in oak or basalt, and a shelf version, pictured here, which also comes in either wood or stone.

This all-day trattoria concept in the heart of Amsterdam’s creative Jordaan quarter was designed by Concrete, a young practice whose studio is a few doors down the street. The restaurant’s owner, IQ Creative, has worked with Concrete before, at venues such as Supperclub and French brasserie Witteveen; Mazzo continues the theme of simply prepared, fresh ingredients and an industrial-style decor. The exposed brick walls and ducting are matched by a cabinet of open pine shelving that stretches the length of narrow volume. With no signage allowed on the facade, a supersized internal logo light fixture gets the message out to passers-by. And they seem to be noticing, as Mazzo is packed with tourists and locals, all enjoying the tasty pasta dishes and pizzas on offer.

t’s never a good idea, especially in an office setting, to be caught watching the clock, but it’s difficult not to make an exception with Laure Gremion’s hypnotic Volta; the dizzying pattern is created by the movement of the second hand against a circular face spoked with 60 radiating lines. The result is, dare we say it, a timely reimagining of a quotidian object but executed with a quiet intelligence and restraint that bodes well for Germion’s future. More so because the Volta is part of an imaginative series of desk and office accessories designed for Alessi by Germion and her fellow second year students in the industrial design bachelor programme at ECAL. For now, the Volta exists only as a prototype, but be assured we’re barracking for its eventual production.

Jonah Takagi’s work combines rigorous technical skill with an instinctive feel for the absurd - but in a good way. The results, like this lamp which looks like the offspring of a welding torch and a stethoscope, are both quirky and practical. Its ‘big bounce’, or reflected light, is provided by a disc that hovers above the light aperture.
